Why missing letters help
Filling in a missing letter makes a child think about the order of the alphabet, not just copy it. The child must recall which letter comes before and after, and then write it. That connects letter names, letter order, and handwriting in one short task. It is a common kindergarten activity and works as a quick warm-up or a review after alphabet tracing.
Make it easier or harder
To make the sheet easier, leave the gap in the middle of a run of five (A B ___ D E) so both neighbors are visible. To make it harder, put the gap at the start or end of the run, or leave two gaps. Type your own lines, one per line, and write ___ where the answer goes. You can also practise numbers by switching to the missing numbers preset. Pair this sheet with alphabet tracing first, so the child has just practised writing the letters.
Quick teaching ideas
Sing the alphabet song slowly and pause at the missing letter. Use an alphabet strip on the desk for children who need support, and take it away when they no longer need it. Have the child say the letter before writing it. For a challenge, ask for the letter that comes before the gap or the next two.
