Word scramble worksheet maker
Type your own words, one per line, and the letters are scrambled into boxes for the child to unscramble and write. Add a word bank for support, and print the answer key on a separate page.

How the scramble works
Each word is shuffled into a new letter order and placed one letter per box, with a writing line underneath for the answer. The scramble is deterministic: the same word is always shuffled the same way, so the page you preview is the page you print and download. A word is never left in its original order, and words must have at least two different letters so a real scramble is possible. Six words fill one page, and the answer key and word bank use the space after the last row or move to a fresh page.
Choose words that fit the learner
Short words with three or four letters, such as sun, frog, or jump, suit early readers who are still matching letters to sounds. Words of five to seven letters, such as pencil or school, work well for second and third grade spelling lists. The boxes shrink slightly for longer words, and twelve letters is the practical limit. Choose words from a book you are reading, a science topic, or this week’s spelling list, and keep the list to a handful per sheet so the task feels achievable.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: turn on the word bank, use UPPERCASE, and choose words with only four or five letters.
- Harder: turn off the word bank, use lowercase, and include longer words or words with double letters like rabbit.
- Hint strategy: tell the child to find the vowels first, then look for letter pairs such as sh, ch, or th.
- Partner play: each partner writes five words, prints the sheet, and swaps with the other.
From puzzle to handwriting
A scramble is a thinking puzzle, not a tracing sheet. The child decides what the word is and then writes it, which makes it a useful check of spelling and handwriting together. After the puzzle, consolidate the words with tracing: paste the same list into the word tracing maker or the sight word tracing page, so the child sees and writes each correct spelling at least once. For first-grade lists, see the first grade sight words.
Private and printable
The words you type stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the scramble is made by JavaScript on your device. The PDF uses standard fonts, so it prints cleanly in black and white with the ink-saving gray option. Because it is a puzzle, the page works well in a center, as early finisher work, or as a take-home activity.

Good to know
Is the scramble different every time I load the page?
No. The same word always scrambles the same way, so your preview matches the printout. Edit the word list to get new puzzles.
Can I scramble phrases or sentences?
This maker scrambles single words only, 3 to 12 letters each. For sentence work, use the fill-in-the-blank maker.
How do I get an answer key?
Keep “Add an answer key page” ticked. The last page of the PDF lists every answer in order.
Is my word list private?
Yes. The words stay in your browser and are not uploaded or stored.
