LETTER FAMILIES

Four families of capital letters

Teaching capitals in shape families gives young writers a head start: the straight-line letters come first because they are easiest to make.

  • Straight lines (E F H I L T): vertical and horizontal strokes only. Start here.
  • Diagonals (A K M N V W X Y Z): slanting strokes, which are harder to aim. Do them after the straight-line family.
  • Big curves (C G O Q S): open or closed curves. Notice where the curve begins and ends.
  • Lines and curves (B D J P R U): a stem joined to a curve.
STROKE DIRECTION

Direction, not just shape

The dotted letters show a shape, not an order of strokes. Most programs teach children to start at the top and write top to bottom and left to right, but starting points for letters like E, M, and S differ between programs. Whatever you choose, be consistent and say it out loud as you trace: “start at the top, go down, lift, across.” Compare with the learner’s school chart.

NEXT STEPS

When to start with capitals

Many children first recognize and write capitals, since the straight lines and curves are simpler than lowercase forms. Once their first name is easy, move on to lowercase with the lowercase letters tracing worksheet. For an individual letter, use the one-letter pages such as Letter A or Letter B, or the full A–Z tracing sheet.

QUESTIONS

Good to know

Which capital letters should a child learn first?

Many teachers begin with the straight-line capitals (E, F, H, I, L, T) and the letters in the child’s own name.

Can I print all 26 capital letters?

Yes. Choose the “A–Z capitals” preset.

Does the sheet show stroke order?

No. It shows the letter shape only, so follow your school’s starting points.
