GUIDE

How sight word practice fits in

Sight words are common words a child learns to recognize quickly, including many that cannot be sounded out easily. Writing them by hand gives a child a second route to remember each word: how it looks, and how it feels to form. Handwriting practice does not replace reading practice. Use these sheets alongside real books, phonics, and talking.

Dolch’s lists were compiled in the 1930s and are still in wide use. The level names are traditional, and classrooms use other lists as well. Paste your school’s list into the box above and the tool works the same way.

PLAN

A simple weekly plan

  • Monday: introduce four new words on a tracing sheet; say and trace each.
  • Tuesday to Thursday: trace, then write each word on the blank line; read the words in a short book.
  • Friday: review all words from the week with fill-in-the-blank sentences.

For a custom classroom list, the sight word tracing maker has the same tools with no preset level.

QUESTIONS

Sight word questions

What are Dolch sight words?

Dolch sight words are 220 common service words, plus 95 nouns, collected by Edward W. Dolch in the 1930s. This site provides the five word levels from pre-primer through third grade.

Which list should I use?

Use your school or curriculum’s list when there is one. If not, begin with pre-primer or primer for younger learners and move up as words become easy.

Are Fry words included?

Not yet. Paste a Fry or school list into any tracing box to make a sheet from it.
