How to write 17
Write 17 as a 1 followed by a 7. The 7 is two strokes: a flat line across the top and a straight diagonal sloping down to the baseline. Some handwriting styles add a short crossbar through the middle of the 7. The model on this page does not, so match whichever form your class uses. Keep the gap between the digits narrow.
A 7 is often confused with a 1 when the top line is too short, or written backwards with the diagonal leaning the wrong way. The flat top is the clue. Compare 1, 7, and 17 on the sheet: the 1 stands tall alone, the 7 has a lid, and in 17 they sit side by side. Draw attention to the lid every time.
Say it and spell it: seventeen
Seventeen is seven plus teen: s-e-v-e-n-t-e-e-n, nine letters, so it is one of the longest teen words. The first five letters spell seven exactly, which is a handy hook. Break it into chunks and say it aloud: sev, en, teen. Children can tap each chunk on the table while they spell.
What 17 means
17 is one ten and 7 ones. Put ten counters in a row and seven more underneath: the first digit tells how many tens, and the second tells how many ones are left over.
17 comes right after 16 and right before 18. Counting back from 17 goes 17, 16, 15, 14. 17 is an odd number: if you share it between two groups, one object is left over. Two groups of 8 plus one more make 17.
Number partners are pairs that add up to 17, such as 1 + 16, 5 + 12, 9 + 8. The written word has 9 letters: s-e-v-e-n-t-e-e-n. Say the number, trace the digits, then trace the word on the number-and-word preset to connect the symbol with its spelling.
Counting ideas for 17
Deal seventeen playing cards or counters and count them into two piles. Try seventeen sorting: tip out a bag of buttons, count seventeen, and sort them by color. For a movement game, hop seventeen times while whispering each count, then shout seventeen at the end.
A practice tip for 17
Seventeen is a good number for working on neat spacing. Ask the child to leave a thumb-sized gap between the digits on the blank line, then check whether their 17 looks like the model. Neat spacing carries over to longer numbers later.
What is on this 17 worksheet
The default sheet has two rows of 17 17 17, then the word seventeen, then a single 17 to write on its own. Each entry gets a dotted model and a blank copy line underneath, so the page fills in the order: practise the digits, trace the word, and try the number without a model. The Digits only button keeps just the three number rows, which suits a short session. The Number and word button prints 17 and seventeen on their own.
The Count up to 17 button loads the numbers 10 to 17 as a short counting run, which is a good way to see where 17 fits in the sequence. Every entry is editable, so you can type your own list, such as 17 17 17 followed by the numbers on either side of 17. The preview shows every page, and the PDF matches it, so check the spacing before you print at actual size.

Number 17 questions
Should the 7 have a line through the middle?
Programs differ. Many classrooms teach a plain 7 and some add a crossbar. Use the form your school uses.
Is seventeen a hard word to spell?
It is long, but it is just seven plus teen. Break it into three chunks, sev-en-teen, and trace the word on the number-and-word preset.
