Dotted name tracing worksheet: trace my name
Type any name and get a sheet of dotted letters ready to trace. Dots show the shape of each letter without covering the page in heavy ink, and the lighter dots stay out of the way of the pencil line.

Dots, dashes, or outline?
Dotted letters are the most common tracing model. They show a clear path and a child can connect the dots in one motion. Dashed letters use longer segments that suit pencil-control practice, while outline letters give a solid shape to trace or color inside. Try each in the style menu, or read our guide on dotted versus outline tracing to match style to skill.
Use the sheet more than once
A single dotted name sheet can be reused in several ways. Slip it inside a plastic sleeve or laminate it, and trace with a dry-erase marker. Trace once with a pencil, then with a colored pencil, then with a thick marker on the next day. Add stickers or a dot marker on the dots for a sensory version, or trace the letters with a finger in a tray of sand or salt. Different tools let the child repeat the motion without boredom.
Name-writing habits to build
Dotted tracing is a model, not a stroke-order lesson. The dots do not show where each stroke begins or ends, so supply that with your voice: “start at the top and go down”. Check that the child starts letters at the top and does not draw circles bottom-up. Compare with a handwriting chart if your classroom uses one, or read about print and cursive models in the handwriting styles guide.
Beyond one name
Once the name is easy, trace a sibling’s name, a pet’s name, or a family word using the word tracing maker. For a connected script, use the cursive name tracing generator.
