PRACTICAL GUIDE

Five playful hand activities before writing

Writing practice can begin away from a worksheet. These activities invite small hand movements through play.

1. Draw big shapes

Use a large sheet of paper and draw lines, loops, or circles together. A wide arm movement is often easier to begin with than a tiny letter.

2. Build with small blocks

Stack blocks, take them apart, and sort pieces by color. Let the child choose the task and avoid turning it into a speed challenge.

3. Roll and pinch dough

Roll a dough snake, pinch small pieces, or make a letter shape. Wash hands afterward and supervise materials that should not be eaten.

4. Move small objects

Pick up large beads, clothespins, or paper scraps and move them between containers. Choose objects suitable for the child's age and supervise anything that could be a choking hazard.

5. Trace with a finger first

Trace a large letter in sand, on a textured card, or on paper before using a pencil. Then try the same letter on a printable page if the child wants to continue.
