How to write 11
Write 11 as two separate 1s standing side by side, each pulled straight down from the top line. Leave a small, even gap between them so they read as a pair rather than one wide bar. Many handwriting programs add a small flag or base to each 1, so follow the model your classroom uses. Tracing 11 is a gentle warm-up for the rest of the teens, because every teen number from 11 to 19 begins with this same first digit.
The most common slip is drawing the two 1s so close together that they touch, or so far apart that the number looks like 1 1. Some children also read 11 as the capital letters II or as a lowercase l, which is why a small flag on each 1 can help. If a child writes the digits in the wrong order in a longer number, remind them that numbers are written left to right, just like words.
Say it and spell it: eleven
Eleven does not follow the -teen pattern, so it is the first teen word children simply have to memorize. It has six letters (e, l, e, v, e, n) and three of them are e. Say it slowly as eh-LEV-en while you point to each letter. Eleven and twelve are often explained as very old words meaning roughly one left over and two left over after ten, which is why they do not sound like one-teen or two-teen.
What 11 means
11 is one ten and 1 one. Put ten counters in a row and one more underneath: the first digit tells how many tens, and the second tells how many ones are left over.
11 comes right after 10 and right before 12. Counting back from 11 goes 11, 10, 9, 8. 11 is an odd number: if you share it between two groups, one object is left over. Two groups of 5 plus one more make 11.
Number partners are pairs that add up to 11, such as 1 + 10, 5 + 6, 9 + 2. The written word has 6 letters: e-l-e-v-e-n. Say the number, trace the digits, then trace the word on the number-and-word preset to connect the symbol with its spelling.
Counting ideas for 11
Make eleven out of anything within reach. A football team fields eleven players, so line up eleven stuffed toys or coins and count them aloud. Try the ten-and-one game: count ten objects into a cup, add one more beside it, and say ten and one makes eleven while you trace the 11. Then swap the contents of the cup and repeat with different objects.
A practice tip for 11
For a child who has finished 1 to 10, eleven is a natural next step because it reuses a digit they already write. Trace two rows, then write 11 on the blank line, and ask which 1 stands for the ten and which 1 stands for the single one.
What is on this 11 worksheet
The default sheet has two rows of 11 11 11, then the word eleven, then a single 11 to write on its own. Each entry gets a dotted model and a blank copy line underneath, so the page fills in the order: practise the digits, trace the word, and try the number without a model. The Digits only button keeps just the three number rows, which suits a short session. The Number and word button prints 11 and eleven on their own.
The Count up to 11 button loads the numbers 10 to 11 as a short counting run, which is a good way to see where 11 fits in the sequence. Every entry is editable, so you can type your own list, such as 11 11 11 followed by the numbers on either side of 11. The preview shows every page, and the PDF matches it, so check the spacing before you print at actual size.

Number 11 questions
Why is eleven not spelled like one-teen?
Eleven and twelve are older number words that never took the -teen ending. They are usually described as meaning one left and two left after counting ten. Children simply learn them as exceptions, and the spelling practice on this page helps.
Should a child write 11 as one number or two digits?
It is one number written with two digits. Ask the child to say eleven, point to the number, and then trace both 1s with a small gap between them.
