How to write 12
Write 12 as a 1 followed by a 2. Pull the 1 straight down, then start the 2 at the top with a curve that sweeps right, slants down toward the bottom left, and finishes with a flat line along the baseline. Leave a small gap between the digits. Because the 2 changes direction more than once, it is worth tracing it slowly the first few times.
The 2 is the usual trouble spot. Some children reverse it so the curve faces left, and some drop the flat bottom and leave it as a hook that looks like a question mark. A backwards 2 can resemble a flipped S or Z. Point out where the 2 starts, at the top and curving right, and compare the child’s digit with the model on the sheet. Also check that the 1 does not drift sideways into the 2.
Say it and spell it: twelve
Twelve is the second teen number with no -teen ending. It has six letters, t-w-e-l-v-e, and begins like two and twenty, which gives a spelling clue: the w is shared by twelve, two, and twenty. Twelve is also a dozen, so children meet it in egg cartons, in the months of the year, and in the inches of a foot ruler.
What 12 means
12 is one ten and 2 ones. Put ten counters in a row and two more underneath: the first digit tells how many tens, and the second tells how many ones are left over.
12 comes right after 11 and right before 13. Counting back from 12 goes 12, 11, 10, 9. 12 is an even number: you can share it into two equal groups of 6, with none left over.
Number partners are pairs that add up to 12, such as 1 + 11, 5 + 7, 9 + 3. The written word has 6 letters: t-w-e-l-v-e. Say the number, trace the digits, then trace the word on the number-and-word preset to connect the symbol with its spelling.
Counting ideas for 12
Count a dozen eggs, real or cut from paper, and notice the two rows of six. Say six and six make twelve as you trace 12. Count the twelve months on a calendar and write 12 beside the last month. A clock face also has twelve numbers, so draw a clock and trace the 12 at the top where the hands meet at noon.
A practice tip for 12
Use 12 to introduce doubles. Draw two groups of six dots, then write 12 underneath. A child who can see 6 and 6 has a first picture of what a double means. Keep it playful, because the sheet is for handwriting practice and the counting is a bonus.
What is on this 12 worksheet
The default sheet has two rows of 12 12 12, then the word twelve, then a single 12 to write on its own. Each entry gets a dotted model and a blank copy line underneath, so the page fills in the order: practise the digits, trace the word, and try the number without a model. The Digits only button keeps just the three number rows, which suits a short session. The Number and word button prints 12 and twelve on their own.
The Count up to 12 button loads the numbers 10 to 12 as a short counting run, which is a good way to see where 12 fits in the sequence. Every entry is editable, so you can type your own list, such as 12 12 12 followed by the numbers on either side of 12. The preview shows every page, and the PDF matches it, so check the spacing before you print at actual size.

Number 12 questions
Is 12 a hard number to write?
The 2 can be tricky because the pencil changes direction, but most children manage with a few slow traces. Use the digits-only preset first, then try the number-and-word preset.
Why is twelve called a dozen?
A dozen is an everyday word for twelve things. It is common with eggs and bakery items, so a child may already hear it at home.
