How to write 14
Write 14 as a 1 followed by a 4. The 4 is the digit that varies most between handwriting programs. Some teach an open 4 made of a diagonal, a crossbar, and a vertical line, while others close the top into a triangle. This worksheet shows one clear model, so compare it to the 4 your class uses and follow that form when the child writes without a model.
Children often put the crossbar too high or too low, or make the vertical line shorter than the diagonal, so the 4 can look like an h or a y. Another slip is writing the 4 backwards, with the diagonal leaning the wrong way. Have the child say each stroke aloud as it is made, then check the finished digit against the model.
Say it and spell it: fourteen
Fourteen keeps the u from four: f-o-u-r-t-e-e-n, eight letters. That makes it easy to confuse with forty, which drops the u and is spelled f-o-r-t-y. A reliable trick is to notice that fourteen contains the whole word four plus teen, while forty is the shorter spelling. Write both words next to each other once and point at the u.
What 14 means
14 is one ten and 4 ones. Put ten counters in a row and four more underneath: the first digit tells how many tens, and the second tells how many ones are left over.
14 comes right after 13 and right before 15. Counting back from 14 goes 14, 13, 12, 11. 14 is an even number: you can share it into two equal groups of 7, with none left over.
Number partners are pairs that add up to 14, such as 1 + 13, 5 + 9, 9 + 5. The written word has 8 letters: f-o-u-r-t-e-e-n. Say the number, trace the digits, then trace the word on the number-and-word preset to connect the symbol with its spelling.
Counting ideas for 14
Fourteen days make a fortnight, so count fourteen days on a calendar and trace 14 beside them. Make a row of fourteen toy cars and push them one at a time into a garage, counting aloud. If your child likes rhymes, count one, two, three, four and keep going to fourteen while tapping each finger or knee.
A practice tip for 14
Number 14 is a good chance to talk about how a number can have two digits that mean different things. Ask the child to point to the 1 and say it stands for one group of ten, then point to the 4 and say it stands for four more. You do not need formal place value language; pointing is enough.
What is on this 14 worksheet
The default sheet has two rows of 14 14 14, then the word fourteen, then a single 14 to write on its own. Each entry gets a dotted model and a blank copy line underneath, so the page fills in the order: practise the digits, trace the word, and try the number without a model. The Digits only button keeps just the three number rows, which suits a short session. The Number and word button prints 14 and fourteen on their own.
The Count up to 14 button loads the numbers 10 to 14 as a short counting run, which is a good way to see where 14 fits in the sequence. Every entry is editable, so you can type your own list, such as 14 14 14 followed by the numbers on either side of 14. The preview shows every page, and the PDF matches it, so check the spacing before you print at actual size.

Number 14 questions
How do I tell fourteen from forty when spelling?
Fourteen keeps the u from four and has -teen at the end. Forty drops the u and ends in -ty. Writing both words on one line makes the difference visible.
Which 4 should my child write?
Use the form your school teaches. This sheet shows an open 4, and some programs use a closed top. The aim here is practice, not a single correct style.
