How to write 15
Write 15 as a 1 followed by a 5. The 5 has three parts: a short vertical line down from the top, a flat line across the top, and a round belly curving around at the bottom. Programs differ on the order of the strokes, so follow the one your class uses. Keep the flat lid wide enough that the 5 does not look like an S.
A 5 is often mixed up with the number 2, the letter S, or a backwards 5 where the belly faces the wrong way. The flat top is the clue: 5 has a lid and 2 has a curve. A child who flips the 5 is not doing anything unusual, because reversals are common while handwriting is developing. Show the model, trace together, and move on.
Say it and spell it: fifteen
Fifteen swaps the v in five for an f: f-i-f-t-e-e-n, seven letters, so it is one of the shortest teens to spell. Notice that fifteen is not spelled fiveteen. The same change happens in fifty. Teaching fifteen and fifty together helps children see that the -teen and -ty endings are different.
What 15 means
15 is one ten and 5 ones. Put ten counters in a row and five more underneath: the first digit tells how many tens, and the second tells how many ones are left over.
15 comes right after 14 and right before 16. Counting back from 15 goes 15, 14, 13, 12. 15 is an odd number: if you share it between two groups, one object is left over. Two groups of 7 plus one more make 15.
Number partners are pairs that add up to 15, such as 1 + 14, 5 + 10, 9 + 6. The written word has 7 letters: f-i-f-t-e-e-n. Say the number, trace the digits, then trace the word on the number-and-word preset to connect the symbol with its spelling.
Counting ideas for 15
Fifteen is a good number for counting by fives. Count fingers as 5, 10, 15 using three hands, or three children holding up one hand each. Set a timer for fifteen minutes for a tidy-up game. Chalk a fifteen-square path on the pavement and hop along it, tracing 15 at the start.
A practice tip for 15
Use 15 to practise number order. Write 14, 15, and 16 on three sticky notes, mix them up, and ask the child to put them in order. Finish by tracing the 15 on the sheet. Sequencing builds a sense of where each number sits on the counting line.

Why is fifteen not spelled fiveteen?
The v in five changes to an f before -teen. The same shift happens in fifty. It is one of the spelling exceptions worth practising by writing the word.
