How to write 19
Write 19 as a 1 followed by a 9. The 9 is a circle at the top with a straight tail running down the right side. Start by drawing the circle, then draw the line down from the right edge of the circle to the baseline. Some programs use a curved tail instead. Either is fine as long as the digit has a clear round top and a tail.
The big mix-up is 9 and 6, especially when children rotate the paper or look at the sheet from the side. Remind them that the 9 has its round part on top and its tail below, like a balloon on a string. A backwards 9 can also look like a g. Place the 6 and 9 models next to each other and point out the difference.
Say it and spell it: nineteen
Nineteen keeps the e from nine: n-i-n-e-t-e-e-n, eight letters. Compare ninety, which drops the e and is spelled n-i-n-e-t-y. It helps to teach nineteen and ninety side by side so children learn which has -teen and which has -ty. Nineteen ends with a clear, stressed teen.
What 19 means
19 is one ten and 9 ones. Put ten counters in a row and nine more underneath: the first digit tells how many tens, and the second tells how many ones are left over.
19 comes right after 18 and right before 20. Counting back from 19 goes 19, 18, 17, 16. 19 is an odd number: if you share it between two groups, one object is left over. Two groups of 9 plus one more make 19.
Number partners are pairs that add up to 19, such as 1 + 18, 5 + 14, 9 + 10. The written word has 8 letters: n-i-n-e-t-e-e-n. Say the number, trace the digits, then trace the word on the number-and-word preset to connect the symbol with its spelling.
Counting ideas for 19
Nineteen is one short of twenty, so it works well as a countdown. Start at nineteen, trace it, and count back one number at a time until you reach zero. Or play nineteen and one more: add one object to a group of nineteen and announce twenty. The pattern shows how each number leads to the next.
A practice tip for 19
Because 19 is the last teen, it is a natural place to review. Have the child trace 11 through 19 on the teens page, then point to the numbers they find easiest. Ask them to choose one to write from memory on a blank line. Their choice shows where more practice would help.
What is on this 19 worksheet
The default sheet has two rows of 19 19 19, then the word nineteen, then a single 19 to write on its own. Each entry gets a dotted model and a blank copy line underneath, so the page fills in the order: practise the digits, trace the word, and try the number without a model. The Digits only button keeps just the three number rows, which suits a short session. The Number and word button prints 19 and nineteen on their own.
The Count up to 19 button loads the numbers 10 to 19 as a short counting run, which is a good way to see where 19 fits in the sequence. Every entry is editable, so you can type your own list, such as 19 19 19 followed by the numbers on either side of 19. The preview shows every page, and the PDF matches it, so check the spacing before you print at actual size.

Number 19 questions
How do I tell nineteen from ninety?
Nineteen ends in -teen and keeps the e from nine. Ninety ends in -ty and drops it. Write both words together to see the difference.
My child mixes up 6 and 9. What helps?
Trace them on adjacent rows and say where the round part sits. The 9 has its circle on top; the 6 has its loop at the bottom.
