How to write 20
Write 20 as a 2 followed by a 0. The 0 is a tall, closed oval, and most programs start it at the top and travel counterclockwise. Make it about as tall as the 2 and leave a small gap. The 2 starts at the top with a curve, slants toward the bottom left, and ends with a flat base.
A zero is not the same as the letter O in handwriting, though they look alike; the number is usually a narrower oval. Children often leave the 0 open at the top or bottom so it looks like a c or a u. Remind them to close the loop where they started. Also watch the 2, because a reversed 2 is common.
Say it and spell it: twenty
Twenty does not end in -teen. It is spelled t-w-e-n-t-y, six letters, and it is the first of the -ty numbers: twenty, thirty, forty. Many people skip the sound of the t, which makes twenny a common misspelling. Say it slowly as twen-ty. Write twenty next to nineteen to show how the pattern changes.
What 20 means
Twenty is two tens and no extra ones. Show it with two groups of ten counters, and write 20 next to them.
20 comes right after 19 and right before 21. Counting back from 20 goes 20, 19, 18, 17. 20 is an even number: you can share it into two equal groups of 10, with none left over.
Number partners are pairs that add up to 20, such as 1 + 19, 5 + 15, 9 + 11. The written word has 6 letters: t-w-e-n-t-y. Say the number, trace the digits, then trace the word on the number-and-word preset to connect the symbol with its spelling.
Counting ideas for 20
Twenty is a milestone for counting. Count twenty fingers and toes together, or twenty steps along a hallway. Set a twenty-second timer and see how many 20s the child can trace before it rings, with neatness counting more than speed. Or count twenty items into two groups of ten.
A practice tip for 20
Twenty introduces the idea that numbers can be built from tens. Show two groups of ten counters and write 20 beside them. A child who sees two tens makes a first step toward understanding that the 2 in 20 stands for two tens and the 0 shows that there are no extras.
What is on this 20 worksheet
The default sheet has two rows of 20 20 20, then the word twenty, then a single 20 to write on its own. Each entry gets a dotted model and a blank copy line underneath, so the page fills in the order: practise the digits, trace the word, and try the number without a model. The Digits only button keeps just the three number rows, which suits a short session. The Number and word button prints 20 and twenty on their own.
The Count up to 20 button loads the numbers 11 to 20 as a short counting run, which is a good way to see where 20 fits in the sequence. Every entry is editable, so you can type your own list, such as 20 20 20 followed by the numbers on either side of 20. The preview shows every page, and the PDF matches it, so check the spacing before you print at actual size.
