Where second graders get stuck
The second grade list holds many words that do not follow phonics rules: does, goes, gave, buy, write, wash. Practise by writing the word, covering it, and writing it again. The sheet provides a model and a copy line for exactly that. After a word is steady, mix it with a few easier words so the practice session stays encouraging.
Contractions and apostrophes
Don’t is the one contraction on the list. Show the child that the apostrophe stands in for the missing o in do not, then trace the word, paying attention to where the apostrophe sits at the top of the line. Add a few more of your own with the word tracing maker.
Practice in sentences
By second grade, writing in sentences matters as much as isolated words.
